In fact, researchers for years have been working with chocolate to discover its effects on the human body. These studies are incredibly important to help us find preventative means to some of the leading diseases in the United States. However, you don’t have to go to a research lab to know the value of chocolate. While it tastes great we all know that it also has a mood food connection. In actuality, many people swear by it and use it as their feel good drug. So what is it that is so fascinating about this super-food?
Chocolate, after all, is a plant-based food. The cocoa bean grows on trees, and it’s a powerful source of nutrients called flavonols, a type of antioxidant that helps protect plants from environmental toxins and can help heal damaged human cells. Of course, cocoa beans undergo processing when they get turned into chocolate. Several studies have demonstrated the health benefits of flavonoids. These powerful chemicals contained in super-foods help to reduce oxidative stress on the cells and in doing so will have a direct impact on heart disease and cancer. But lately researchers have been more interested in how these flavonoids, especially those found in chocolate, affect the brain. Chocolate is definitely a food loved by millions. Many even swear that they are addicted calling themselves choc-o-holics. In fact the addiction may be something very real due to the mood food connection. But the bigger thing to consider is the actual health benefits. If 2 cups of hot cocoa help to improve memory then that should not be too hard of a prescription to follow. And let’s not forget the cardiovascular benefits. While more research is needed to better understand chocolate as one of the foods that improves memory, I am all for anything that tastes great and improves my mind.
